Summer Math

Students entering grades 5–8 (2009-2010 school year) will be using the internet based math program ALEKS to fulfill their summer Math requirements.    ALEKS letters for rising 5th graders, with login and password information, will be sent home in May.   All 5th – 8th graders will be required to log in 18 productive hours on ALEKS this summer.

Students entering grades 1-4 (09-10 School Year) will receive a Math Workbook to complete over the summer. Workbooks will be distributed to students later this Spring.  The workbooks will be age appropriate and used as a refresher of concepts learned throughout the school year.   These completed workbooks are due the first day of school in August.

Summer Academic Programs for students entering grades 1-8 (09-10 School Year) will be available this summer.   We offer these classes to assist students in completing the summer reading and math requirements under the guidance of a certified SFACS teacher.  Click here for more information.

IMPORTANT SUMMER INFORMATION REGARDING THE ALEKS MATH PROGRAM

Welcome to Summer Break! We hope everyone has settled into the more relaxed summer break mode. We would like to clear up any confusion or questions you might have regarding the expectations and summer requirements for the ALEKS program for students entering 5th -8th grades in the fall. Below are the answers to some of the questions we have received so far.

1. Student accounts will not zero out for the summer. The hours they have accumulated to date on ALEKS will keep
accumulating as we go through the summer.

2. Students entering grades 6th – 8th grades should complete a total of 54 hours (36 hours required through the school year PLUS 18 hours required in the summer) before returning in the fall. Quick Tables no longer count toward hour requirements.

3. Students entering 5th grade will, of course, begin at zero hours since they are new to the program. They will need to complete 18 hours over the course of the summer.

4. 5th Grade PLUS students have received different instructions from their individual teacher.

5. We encourage all students to complete their pie over the summer as this represents what students should have
mastered in the previous school year. The further the student progresses in the pie, the more success in math he
or she will experience in the upcoming school year. This is particularly important as we move to implement Pre Algebra and Algebra I in our curriculum for 7th and 8th grades.

6. If your child should complete his or her pie and needs to move to the next level, please email Stephanie.jones@sfaschool.cdom.org or call the school office during our summer office hours 8:30-12:30 Monday
through Thursday. The school office will be closed the week of June 29 – July 2.

7. There will be a summer enrichment program offered for ALEKS beginning July 13th. Students attending this course will complete all ALEKS requirements as well as have teachers on hand to help guide and aid their progress on ALEKS.
