Student Clubs & Activities
Academics Team- (6th – 8th) - A middle school Academics team of
6th through 8th grade students competes via computer in two international
competitions. A spring meet is held in the diocese to compete against other
middle school teams. Try-outs and team selection is in October with practices
held after school. 2010 Fall and 2011 Spring Knowledge Master Open State Champions!
- Altar Servers (4th – 8th) – Catholic boys and girls, grades 4th – 8th are
invited and encouraged to participate in this ministry. The student must have
received the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Training sessions are set up by the
church and are held at night or on weekends. 4th grade servers will be trained
during the school day in the spring.
- Ambassadors (8th) – 8th graders are chosen to represent St. Francis of
Assisi Catholic School at various events, such as Open House, Grandparents
Night, etc.
- Art Club (6th – 8th) – held after school, students may sign up to come to a
session to create a special project
- Cheerleading (5th – 8th) – The cheerleading squads are composed of fifth
through eighth grade girls who cheer for the PAA football team and other
PAA sports. There amust be maintained.
- Choir - The school will coordinate a youth choir for students who wish to
participate from grades 3 through 8. Practice will be after school and at other
scheduled times. All members must remain faithful to their commitment to
perform at scheduled events.
- Forensics (6th – 8th) - Forensics at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School
encourages and assists students in grades 5-8 in the development of public
speaking skills. Coaches promote specific skills in such categories as
Dramatic and Humorous Interpretation, Poetry, Storytelling, Oratory, Debate
and Readers’ Theatre. The Forensics team sponsors an invitational
tournament in the fall and participates in others in winter/spring. Try-outs are
held in September.
Mass Cantors (6 -8) - Students take on a more active role in the mass by
leading the singing during the liturgy.
- Mass Lectors - (4th – 8th) – Students are selected to receive training to
proclaim the Word of God at our school masses. Training consists of three sessions that will take place during and after school .
- Master of Ceremonies (8) – This is a ministry for our more experienced
Altar Servers. Students will learn to guide the younger servers at mass, assist our Priests with special liturgies and serve at funerals.
- Math Counts (6-8) - is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement throughout the U.S. The Math Counts program begins as an open club to any interested students in 6th-8th grade. Final team selection is made after a test in January. The 4 top scoring students become the official Math Counts team. This team participates in a round of competitions beginning locally in Memphis and then, if qualified, they advance to state and national competitions.
- National Junior Beta Club (7th-8th) - A Mass is held for the newly
inducted members of this honor society in conjunction with a weekly school
Mass in November. Candidates must have a 3.2 GPA, 2 letters of
recommendation, and exemplary conduct. Members who fall below the
standards for scholarship, character, leadership, or service will be placed on
probation for one semester. He/she will have one semester to return to the
Beta Club Standards.
- National Junior Honor Society (7th-8th) – The National Junior Honor
Society is the front runner of organizations and societies that promote
appropriate recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments
in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, service and citizenship.
Candidates (grades 7th and 8th only) will be invited to complete an
application based on a first semester cumulative grade point average of 3.7,
three letters of recommendation and exemplary conduct. In addition,
constitution by-laws require that the candidate have been in attendance at the
school the equivalent of one full semester.
An application does not guarantee admission to the society as
candidates will then be evaluated by Administration and faculty on the basis of
service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Upon completion of the
application process and approval of Administration and faculty, the NJHS
school sponsor will issue candidates letters of membership. In addition, a
membership induction ceremony will be held to recognize all new members.
- News Bowl (3rd – 6th) - A school sponsored international critical thinking
program. Students in grades 3-6 compete locally and regionally via the
Internet in creative problem solving activities. Testing and teaOctober with practices held after school beginning in January.
- Safety Patrol (5th – 8th) - Students will work with a St. Francis of Assisi
Catholic School faculty member to aid younger students each day at arrival
and dismissal.
- Scouts - Parents of both boys and girls have organized scout troops, which
usually meet in the St. Francis Parish Life Center after school during the school year. Students may wear their scout uniform on the day of scheduled
after school meetings.
- Student Government Association - (6th – 8th) - The SGA promotes
citizenship and organization of services to the student body and parish as well
as charitable contributions to the community. The Council, under the faculty
monitor’s guidance, elects officers and representatives each year for grades 6
through 8. Elections are held in September. All students in grades 6-8 belong
to the Student Council with offices being held by students.
- Yearbook Staff (7 – 8) – Interested students should apply to the
Yearbook Advisor to be considered for the staff. All meetings are held after
school
